Meta introduced Meta Quest Super Resolution on its developer blog on July 10th. This is a virtual reality-optimized upscaling algorithm based on Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, developed in collaboration with Qualcomm's graphics team.
When can this be enabled, and what does this news mean for both developers and users?
In this article we tell you everything we know about it.
According to Meta spokespersons, Super Resolution can be enabled now, and has been available since July 10 for all developers who wish to try it.
Super Resolution is available for Meta Quest Link via the Oculus Debug Tool and enabled when Link Sharpening is set to "Quality."
What benefits will this algorithm bring to Meta developers?
Super Resolution represents an improvement in image quality over the current sharpening methods used in Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro, such as Link Sharpening+. In other words, this algorithm aims to improve the clarity and quality of Meta Quest-specific VR applications.
In addition to the default bilinear sampling, this algorithm will expose "normal" and "quality" sharpening methods based on robust contrast adaptive sharpening (RCAS) techniques via an OpenXR extension.
According to the brand, Super Resolution is up to 2x faster than the "quality" sharpening algorithm currently used for Link Sharpening+ in Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro.
What is the final image expected to look like for Meta Quest users?
The final image produced by the VR compositor is expected to be generated by adapting the 2D and 3D content to the product's display resolution. VR compositor is a term that refers to a software or tool used in the field of virtual reality (VR) to create and compose visual content.
VR Compositor allows VR content developers to combine and arrange visual elements in a virtual environment. This includes positioning and adjusting 3D models, configuring lights and cameras, applying special effects, and creating interactions. In this way, VR Compositor provides a visual interface and intuitive tools that allow creators to efficiently manipulate and configure these elements.
The main goal of a VR Compositor is to enable designers and developers to create immersive and compelling virtual reality experiences that users can enjoy. Using this tool, they can build virtual worlds, design interactions, and generate high-quality visual content to deliver an engaging and immersive experience to users of virtual reality devices.
So this news promises very high-quality immersive sessions for Meta Quest users.
