The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the long-awaited sequel to the best foldable phone you can buy right now. But if Samsung wants to keep that title, it needs to keep working hard. So what do we know about it and when will it arrive in Chile? We'll tell you more below.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 design and display
In lieu of leaks telling us otherwise, we'll assume the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will remain a foldable book, with a narrow outer display and a square inner screen.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 made both displays larger and slightly shorter, helping them feel more useful, and we expect the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to keep this subtle but important change.
One of the most notable parts of the Z Fold series' design is how thick and heavy the phone has to be to house that large internal display. The Z Fold 5 may be slightly lighter thanks to new materials, but it'll likely weigh more than even the most rugged regular smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Cameras
We already like the Galaxy Z Fold 4's cameras, which have finally brought the foldable up to par with Samsung's other flagship phones by using the same rear sensors found on the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus.
The foldable features a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP 3x zoom telephoto camera, a 10MP exterior selfie camera, and a 4MP interior under-display camera.
The Z Fold 5's cameras are expected to exceed these expectations.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Performance
The safest bet for the Galaxy Z Fold 5's chipset is that it will be a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or higher. We expect this silicon to be announced soon (following Qualcomm's previous announcement schedule) and to power the vast majority of Android phones in 2023.
That said, there could be a Plus version or a similar upgraded version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that the Z Fold 5 would use instead.
For example, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 uses a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, giving it a performance and power efficiency advantage over the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip in phones from earlier this year, like the Galaxy S22 series.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Battery and Charging
Samsung also needs to improve the Z Fold 5's battery life and charging. The Z Fold 5 is unlikely to be able to outperform regular phones in terms of battery efficiency, due to its limited internal space and the fact that it has two screens to operate.
However, being able to last longer than the Galaxy Z Fold 4's 8 hours and 20 minutes, and closer to the 10-hour mark most mainstream smartphones achieve, is something we hope the Z Fold series will match sooner rather than later.
