DashCam Nextbase 622GW

With the Nextbase 622GW dashcam, you'll have a great car security camera option that's sure to surprise you. Learn about its features here!

Nextbase 622GW DashCam

The Nextbase 622GW DASHCAM features a built-in polarizing filter, image stabilization, 4K video resolution, and excellent night vision mode. The resulting footage is of excellent quality, making it extremely easy to identify license plate and vehicle details in all conditions.

The addition of Alexa voice control and What3Words emergency geolocation are welcome bonuses.

For starters, the 622GW features a new Ambarella H22 quad-core chipset, allowing it to capture crisp 4K footage at 30 fps. Better yet, the company has installed a removable polarizing filter, allowing drivers to rotate a bezel on the front of the lens to produce beautiful, glare-free images.

When shooting in normal, well-lit situations, the resulting 4K clips are on par with GoPro's entry-level offerings, and it's extremely easy to slow down playback to 120fps via a super slow-motion setting.

This is particularly useful for capturing a license plate during a hit-and-run incident, or capturing individual frames during an accident, for example.

Features of the Nextbase 622GW

The dashcam also has an option to add a rear camera module that records at 1080p/30 fps, but it's sold separately. On the plus side, this doesn't require an annoyingly long cable hanging from the rear window because it plugs neatly into the side of the 622GW.

You interact with the Nextbase 622GW dashcam via a crisp, three-inch, full-color rear touchscreen that features small icons for navigating the various menu screens.

These can be a little tricky to locate, especially when you're driving (not recommended), while the touchscreen requires obvious digit swipes before the command is recognized.

Alternatively, you can link Amazon Alexa voice control to the 622GW via the accompanying MyNextbase Connect app, which is available for iOS and Android devices. Once the two pieces of software are linked, you can simply say, "Alexa, ask my dash cam to take a photo," and the camera will oblige.

It generally works well, although if you're in a noisy vehicle, Alexa may have trouble recognizing commands.

Emergency and breakdown services are increasingly turning to innovative geocoding to provide assistance more quickly, as the technology can accurately pinpoint a location within three meters of a damaged vehicle, for example.

Previous generations of Nextbase dash cams have been hugely frustrating to use, often failing to provide a stable connection for transferring still images and videos between the phone and camera, but things have improved. The setup process is still a bit fiddly and time-consuming, and the Wi-Fi connection between devices sometimes fails, but we managed to recover some images and footage after a few attempts.
